ORLANDO, Fla. – After building an early lead in its inaugural meeting against Navy, the Air Force women's tennis team fell 4-2 to the Midshipmen on Saturday afternoon at the USTA National Campus.
The Falcons improved to 5-1 this spring in doubles play behind wins on lines two and three. On court two, Falcon duo Abby Cotuna/Isabella Flodin move to 4-0 on the year with a 6-4 victory over Navy's Casey Accola/Sia Chaudry; Andrea Le/Courtney Swift improved to 4-2 on court three earning a 6-4 win of their own against Midshipmen Stella Ribaudo/Parvathi Shanker, clinching the Falcons' sixth-straight doubles win.
In singles play, it was Swift striking first on court four, taking Accola in a straight-set, 6-4, 6-2 win, earning her second dual singles win of the season, and her first on line three.
On court six, Freshman Arianna Van Houweling split the first two sets against Navy's Sylvia Eklund, winning the first 6-3 and falling 7-5 in the second, before their match was called.
After falling behind 2-0, it was singles wins on courts one, two, three and five which clinched a Navy victory.
From Head Coach Kim Gidley:
"This was the kind of match I would have expected for playing a service academy (Navy) for the first time in program history. Navy was very talented throughout their line-up and gave us all we could handle.
We needed to convert on certain points to keep the momentum we created to come away with the win and we just missed those opportunities to make a big difference in the match.
"It was an incredible experience and venue and the USTA National Campus and ESPN plus put on a first class event for both teams. Our players left everything on the court and I am proud of them. I look forward to a chance to be back again."
Air Force women's tennis (2-5) returns to USAFA to resume dual play with a March 4 doubleheader against St. Thomas and Chicago State in the Cadet East Gym on March 4.
