FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Air Force women's tennis team, playing on Friday for the chance at a share of first place with opponent Wyoming, fell 4-2 at the CSU Tennis Complex in Fort Collins.
Air Force's dominance in doubles play extended through Friday's match, as the Falcons defeated Wyoming on lines one (Alexis Odom/Sydney Fitch) and two (Abby Cotuna/Isabella Flodin) to secure their ninth-straight doubles point, remaining undefeated against league opponents in dual doubles competition. Cotuna/Flodin notched the first win over Wyoming's Violetta Borodina/Maria Oreshkina (11-6), winning 6-4 after starting down 3-1 in the set, earning their sixth-straight win and improving to 13-3 in dual play. Fitch/Odom won the clinching point, downing Ana Fernandez/Nikol Dobrilova, 6-4.
It was sophomore Alexis Odom on court three who earned the Falcons' (10-10, 6-3 MW) second point of the day, defeating Wyoming's Noesjka Brink, 6-3, 6-1.
On court five, Cotuna led Wyoming's Nikol Dobrilova, 4-3, in a third-set tiebreaker when the match was called.
Singles wins for Wyoming (13-9, 8-1 MW) on courts four, two, six and one (in order) won the day for the first-place Cowgirls, who secured the 2023 Mountain West regular-season title with their Friday win.
From Head Coach Kim Gidley:
"What a match today. That is exactly what you would expect for a match in which the conference championship was on the line. The match went down to the wire with the final three matches all going into their third set.
"The fight is there – We just fell short today. Wyoming is extremely well-coached and in first for a reason. However, this team still has a lot of tennis left to play, and I am really eager to see what they can accomplish."
