USAF ACADEMY – Air Force lost their home-opening match against Western Michigan, 1-0, Thursday evening at Cadet Soccer Stadium. The Falcons, now 0-3 on the season, turn their focus towards redemption in the second match of the weekend. The Broncos improved to 2-1 on the season.
A veteran WMU squad, led by eight graduate players, struck early at USAFA as senior Charlie Sharp scored via touch from Carson Hodgson second minute. The Broncos went scoreless in the ensuing 88 minutes despite outshooting the Falcons in the match, 12-8.
Air Force team captains Thaddaeus Dewing and Luke Hill, alongside brother Greg Hill, attempted two shots apiece to lead the AF offense. Greg put two shots on goal while Luke and Dewing put one on target each.
Senior AF goalie Jakob Stone made one save in his third appearance this season. Graduate counterpart Ethan Brandt made four saves on the night.
"I was pleased with how the men responded in the second half to a 2022 NCAA Elite 8 team," said head coach Doug Hill. "We went down early but responded well to a veteran team that gave no quarter. Looking forward, we need to work on executing a full 90 minutes to get the result we want to see. We had younger players step into big roles and play cohesively with our veteran athletes. Despite the loss, I saw a lot of growth in the team."
The Falcons return to action at Cadet Soccer Stadium, Sunday (Sept. 3), against Sacramento State. Action is slated for a 1 p.m. MT start.
