SAN LUIS OBISPO – Air Force won four of the 10 weight classes but ultimately came up short of the dual meet win against Cal Poly, 23-17, Sunday afternoon in the Mott Athletics Center. The Falcons' dual record drops to 2-4 while the Mustangs improved to 4-1 in the wake of a three-meet win streak over the weekend.
Air Force seniors led the charge with all points tallied by the class of 2024. Garrett Kuchan was first to tabulate AF points with a hard-fought 7-2 decision win over Abe Hinrichsen—Kuchan's second dual meet win of the season and fifth win overall.
Senior 165-pounder No. 15 Giano Petrucelli notched his second bonus-point win of the weekend in dominant fashion, posting a technical fall (19-3, 6:32) over Michael Goldfeder. Petrucelli has 12 wins on the campaign, his second win by technical fall.
Senior co-team captain No. 6 Sam Wolf put the hostile Cal Poly faithful on notice with a rough-and-tough 7-3 decision win over Kendall La Rosa. Wolf remains undefeated in duals (5-0) with his 11th win of the season.
Senior 197-pounder Calvin Sund met with Jarad priest in a decisive bout, coming up just short of a tying takedown and falling, 6-3. Cal Poly sealed the deal on the dual.
Despite the boastful hostility in the Mott Athletics Center, senior co-team captain and All-American No. 2 Wyatt Hendrickson was not phased and remained composed in his 40-second routing of Cole Jackson. Hendrickson, the NCAA's reigning two-times Most Dominant Wrestler, has 11 pins this season. Hendrickson spent just 1:18 on the mats over the weekend.
Air Force underclassmen Tucker Owens, Bubba Wright, and Joe Fernau put up valiant efforts against three ranked opponents— two of which are in the NCAA top-10.
Next up, the Falcons head to the Dakotas for a pair of Big 12 matchups against South Dakota state (Jan. 26), and North Dakota State (Jan. 28).
