Air Force Cedes City for Champions Cup, Falling 2-1 to Colorado College

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A late goal for Air Force Women's Soccer was not enough to overcome a 2-0 deficit, as the Falcons fell to Colorado College in the third City for Champions Cup at Weidner Field on a snowy Wednesday evening in downtown Colorado Springs.

The Tigers (8-9-3, 4-5-2 MW) logged scores in the 21^st and 56 minutes of play. CC scored its opening goal off of a cross dialed into the front of the Falcon net from the righthand corner by Brett Tsamasfyros. Kendall Memoly found Tsamasfyros' pass for the 1-0 score, which held through halftime.

35 minutes later, in the second half, Memoly assisted on Colorado College's second score, driving up past the penalty arc and chipping in a pass to Finley Schoenbeck, who challenged Falcon goalkeeper Kylie McElroy, getting a shot past McElroy right side to lift CC to a 2-0 lead.

An offensive outburst in the second half for the Falcons paid off in Annika Jost earning her third goal of the season to tie a team high. In the 74^th minute, fellow freshman Mai Mateaki, driving along the right side, sent a strike at CC goalkeeper Regan Wallace. Wallace, getting hands on Mateaki's attempt, let the resulting rebound get out of her hands to fall at the feet of an attacking Jost, who was able to deposit Mateaki's attempt in the left corner of the Tigers' net.

The Falcons got their share of set pieces late in the contest, earning a pair of corner kicks in the 85^th minute but were unable to find an equalizer.

Air Force closed its evening with 12 total shots at the CC net and seven on goal; Mateaki, who was the tip of the Air Force spear through the second half, finished her night with a team-high four shots and three on frame aimed at Wallace; Julia Tierney added a pair of attempts at the CC net and one shot on goal; McElroy earned five saves on the evening in the Air Force net; Relieving McElroy after injury during the second CC score, freshman Jenica Opdahl closed her night with one save in 33 minutes of play.
