This Week: The seventh-ranked Air Force rifle team hosts No. 1-ranked Alaska-Fairbanks, Saturday, Nov. 9, at 8:30 am at the Cadet Rifle Range. Live scoring will be available at MegaLink.
The Matchup: UAF holds the top score in the nation with a 4749, Oct. 12. Air Force's top score of 4721 on Nov. 2 is the 18th best in the nation. The teams met in a dual last season at the Academy and UAF nipped the Falcons, 4719-4709. The Nanooks had a slight edge in each event by winning the smallbore (2335-2332) and air rifle (2384-2377). Scott Rockett was the top Falcon, placing second in aggregate with an 1184. Rockett placed second in smallbore with a season-high 589. The Nanooks went on to finish third at the NCAAs last season while Air Force placed fifth.
Last Week: Air Force earned its 11th straight President's Trophy be defeating Army and Navy, Nov. 2, at the Academy's Cadet Rifle Range. Air Force shot a new President's Trophy record score of 5890, followed by Navy (5860), Army (5823) and Coast Guard (4719). Senior Lauren Hurley was second in aggregate score with an 1182, including a career-best 598 in air rifle. Freshman teammate Lily Wytko was third at 1179, also shooting a career-best 598 in air rifle. Freshman Bethany Butler tied for third with a career best 1179. Junior Victoria Leppert was fifth with an 1174. Butler won the smallbore competition with a career-best 593. Hurley was fifth in smallbore at 584 and sophomore William Steen shot a career-best 582.
The next day, Air Force improved to 6-0 on the season by defeating Army, 4721-4650, in a dual meet, Nov. 3, at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Air Force's 4721 is a season high and ties as the ninth best in school history. Senior Lauren Hurley won the aggregate with a score of 1185. Junior Victoria Leppert was second at 1179 while a pair of freshmen, Lily Wytko and Bethany Butler, tied for third at 1177. William Steen was fifth (1172) and Scott Rockett was sixth (1171). Wytko and Leppert tied for the smallbore title, each shooting 586 with 36 centers. In air rifle, Hurley won with a season high 599. Sophomore Megan Torrence was second with a career-best 595. Leppert was third (593) and Bethany Butler was fourth with a new career-best 592.
