RENO, Nev. – Three members of the Air Force boxing team picked up event titles at the Nevada Invitational this evening (Nov. 8) in Reno. Two sophomores and a freshman claimed wins inside the Eldorado Hotel and Casino, as a relatively young Falcon squad faced off against regional opponents.
Sophomore Sebastyan Correa Rios decisioned Nevada's Zacchaeus Washington in a 135-pound bout, while classmate James Burnias forced the referee to call his 136-pound contest with Christopher Sierra of UC Davis in the third round. Freshman Trey Coleman rounded out the Falcons' trio of winners – and helped Air Force to a winning record over host Nevada, as he claimed a decision over Emiliyon Daniels in the 160-pound contest.
Overall, the Falcons went 2-1 against boxers from the host Wolfpack squad, as freshman Jaydan Douglas suffered a 156-pound loss to Billy Fisher. Air Force also split their card with UC Davis, as the Aggies' Aliya Hilzy defeated junior Charlotte McPhee-Gillum in a 125-pound bout. The Falcons wrapped up the night with three bouts against contenders from Sacramento State. Freshman Cedric Gordon Jr. dropped 145-pound decision to Marcos Vasquez, while classmate Sela Panuve fell in her 147-pound bout with Ayahna Gonzales and junior newcomer Christian Hughes lost a heavyweight decision to Austin Menlendez.
The Falcons continue a busy weekend of competition tomorrow (Nov. 9), when another contingent of boxers compete at the USC Invitational in Los Angeles.
