Air Force Fencing Combines For 16 Team Wins At NU Duels

Air Force fencing completed competition at the Northwestern Duels, which ran Sat.-Sun, Feb. 3-4, at Ryan Fieldhouse in Evanston, Ill.
The two teams combined to go 16-5 in team competition, with the men's team going 9-1 and the women's team going 7-4.
On the men's side, Air Force had a dominant performance, nearly completing an undefeated weekend. The Falcons went a perfect 5-0 on Saturday, with wins over Cleveland State, Detroit Mercy, Wayne State, Lawrence and Incarnate Word. Air Force went 4-1 on Sunday, with wins over Wayne State, Detroit Mercy, Lawrence and Boston College. Its lone loss was to Stanford by one point at 14-13.
The women's team went 5-1 on Saturday, highlighted by a 16-11 win over #12 Penn State. The Falcons also defeated Denison, Cleveland State, Wayne State and Lawrence. Its lone setback was to #12 Penn State.
On Sunda, the women earned a 27-0 win over Fairleigh Dickinson and 26-1 over Detroit Mercy. The Falcons fell to #8 Northwestern, #9 Temple and Boston College.
The men's team had several standout performances, led by the foil group. All five foil competitors for the Falcons posted double-digit win totals on the weekend. Freshmen Vlad Lovin and James Jang led the way with Lovin going a perfect 13-0 and Jang going 15-2.
In the epee, junior George Gasparovich IV led the group with 15 bout victories. Junior Siddhant Padhye followed with 13 wins.
In saber, freshman William Barber posted 12 bout victories. Senior Eric Iwamoto added 11 and freshman Jackson Houtz had 10.
On the women's side, the epee group led the way with three athletes reaching double-digit wins. Freshman Eri McClain-Yu had 21 bout victories, with sophomore Ellie Kim adding 16 and senior Josie Ratzlaff posting 13.
In foil, sophomore Melissa Kline posted 20 victories to lead the group. Freshman Alexis Dragne also reached double-figures in wins with 13.
In saber, sophomore Mira Vestel led the group with 17 bout victories. Freshman Audrey Baker followed with 15 wins.
The Falcons return to action Feb. 10-11 at the Duke Invite in Durham, NC.
