Air Force drops conference opener

SAN JOSE- Limited to just one extra-base hit while surrendering nine walks, Air Force fell into a nine-run hole through the game's first six innings as the Falcons were topped 10-2 in Friday's Mountain West opener.
Jake Greiving was one of two Falcons to produce a multi-hit day, as the senior was 3-4 with a double and an RBI. As well, Friday represents Greiving's first three-hit game of the year.
Now with an on-base streak at 47-consecutive games, Aerik Joe was 2-4 while also drawing a walk.
Chase Spencer and Walker Zapp knocked base-hits as well, while Connor Christenson's 9th-inning single stands as the first of his collegiate career.
Seungmin Shim battled over his 5.0 innings, though the senior was responsible for six runs (five earned) as the result of seven hits and four walks.
The lefty saw a lead-off walk brought home by an RBI double in the 1st before the Spartans produced multi-run innings in the 3rd and 4th.
Rhyne Davis was the first Falcon arm called upon in the 6th, as the freshman picked up just one out. Not helped by two walks, Rhyne allowed an RBI double and a run-scoring wild pitch. Following a sacrifice fly later in the inning, the C4C was on the hook for three runs.
Sam Hentges did well to slide out of the 6th, picking up a flyout and a swinging strikeout in his two batters faced.
Gaines Estridge bridged the 7th inning, retiring three of the four batters he faced in a scoreless frame. Bowen Brantingham allowed a run on two hits and two walks, while Chase Spencer made his first pitching appearance in the 8th, striking out the lone batter he faced to end the inning.
The Falcons 2-3-4 hitters were a combined 0-12 in Friday's ballgame, while the entire Air Force lineup was 2-17 (.118) with runners in scoring position.
The loss marks Air Force's sixth-consecutive defeat.
Tomorrow, the Falcons will look to break the skid in the second game of the conference-opening series, with first-pitch slated for 3:00 pm MT.
