Falcons Advance Five During Regional Semifinals

RENO, Nev. – The Air Force boxing team advanced five out of the semifinal round of the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) Western Regionals this evening (March 8), as eight fighters took to the ring at the Silver Legacy in Reno. Backed by victories from three men and two women, the Falcons went 5-3 overall during the second night of action.
Sophomore KJ Johnson and senior Victor Benitez claimed victories for the men, while junior Luke Kohout earned a walkover win at 147 pounds. Johnson earned a split decision win over California's Alejandro Rojas in the 132-pound division, while Benitez forced the referee to stop his heavyweight contest with Nevada's Tyler Slaughter during the second round.
The Air Force women swept through their semifinal bouts, with freshmen Julianna Morris and Naomi Brabham advancing to the championships of their respective weight divisions. Morris decisioned Aliya Hirzy of UC Davis at 125 pounds, while Brabham earned the judges' vote in her 112-pound bout with Nevada's Sandra Guiterrez.
Three other Falcons also competed on Friday, but suffered defeats in their semifinal contests. Senior Dylan West dropped a 139-pound split decision to California's Aaron Tirado, while classmate Andrew Ison lost his 165-pound match to Utah's Logan Jannick and sophomore Neo Takazawa fell by split decision to Misael Renteria of UC Davis in his 156-pound contest. West will finish third at 139 pounds, while Ison and Takazawa will fight for their respective regional bronze medals tomorrow.
The Falcons return to the Silver Legacy tomorrow (March 9) afternoon for the final day of competition at the NCBA Western Regionals. Action is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. (PT) and tickets are $15 at the door.
