Air Force drops series finale to San Diego State

SAN DIEGO- In a 3-3 game, the Falcons surrendered five 7th inning runs, as Air Force was unable to claw back in the 8-4 loss.

Aerik Joe was the only Falcon with multiple hits, going 2-3 with an RBI triple in the 9th. He also swiped a stolen base in two attempts.

His lone hit, Charlie Jones launched his 10th home run of the spring to tie the game at 3-3 in the 7th. Jones has hit eight long balls since April 29 and joins Jay Thomason (17 HR's) as the only other Falcon with double-digit homers.

Chase Spencer led off the game with a base-hit before immediately stealing second, as Sam Kulasingam drove him in with a single through the right side to score the first run of afternoon.

After five shutout innings, Ben Weber allowed the first three Aztecs of the 6th to reach base, loading the bases. Kyle Moats entered the hostile situation, marking his team-leading 22nd appearance.

Moats picked up a looking strikeout to record the first out of the inning, though a two-run single and a sacrifice fly pushed San Diego State in front with a 3-2 lead.

Jones' solo home run a half inning later tied the game at 3-3, though the Aztecs continued to add on. Sam Hentges relieved Moats in the 7th with a runner at third and one out, and after starting his outing with a strikeout, a walk and a hit-batter eventually led to a San Diego State grand slam.

After a superb appearance on Friday, Gaines Estridge did not record an out among the three batters he faced, including walking in a run. Air Force trailed 8-3 going into the 8th.

Joe's RBI triple in the 8th cut the lead to just a swing, though Air Force was struck out in succession in the final inning. The loss snaps a seven-game winning streak over San Diego State.

Heading into the final weekend of the regular season, Air Force remains the current third-seed of the upcoming Mountain West Tournament.

The Falcons will conclude regular season play beginning Thursday, May 16 when Air Force hosts Fresno State for a three-game series. The Bulldogs head to Colorado Springs atop the conference standings, as the Air Force trails Fresno State by just one game.
