9/19/2024 3:46:00 PM | Cross Country
The Air Force cross country team is back in action this weekend, when it makes its return to Lincoln, Neb., and the Woody Greeno / Jay Dirksen Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 21.
MEET INFORMATION
The 34th-annual Woody Greeno / Jay Dirksen Invitational, a meet co-hosted by the University of Nebraska and Nebraska Wesleyan University to honor two of their longtime coaches, will be contested throughout Mahoney Golf Course (7900 Afams St) in Lincoln. The men will complete an 8Kc circuit, beginning at 10:00 a.m. (CT), while the women will follow with a 5K race 50 minutes later. Admission is $5, and spectators are encourages to park in the Mahoney Park lots, located to the north of the course, off North 70th and Fremont. Results will be available via Black Squirrel Timing (a direct link can be found on the Falcons' schedule page at GoAirForceFalcons.com).
HISTORY 101
Air Force has competed at the Greeno / Dirksen Invitational 16 times since 1999 – and captured the team title in eight of those appearances. After tying with Nebraska for the championship at their first meet, the men have won seven titles outright (2000, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2011, 2012, 2016), while Ben Payne (2003), Abe Wengel (2004) and Jim Walmsley (2010, 2011) have claimed individual titles. On the women's side, Air Force captured the team title in 2021 to help the Falcons to a sweep that year.
MEN DEBUT IN NATIONAL RANKINGS
09-17-24 | The men earned a No. 30 national ranking in the first USTFCCCA coaches' poll of the 2024 season. Air Force, which received votes in the preseason poll, has been mentioned in the national conversation (either ranked or receiving votes) for 57-straight weeks – a program-record streak that dates back to the opening poll of the 2017 season.
THE NEXT COURSE
Air Force is back in action next Friday (Feb. 27), when the men travel to Madison, Wis., for the Nuttycombe Invitational and the women head to Columbia, Mo., for the Gans Creek Invitational.
