USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- Despite a hot start, the Air Force volleyball team suffered a 3-1 setback to Colorado State this evening (Oct. 16) at the Academy. The Falcons dominated the opening frame and rolled to a 25-14 win, before dropping narrow 25-27, 21-25, 20-25 decisions to the visiting Rams.
Senior Ashley Bible led all players with 15 kills, while the sophomore duo of Grace Fiaseu (11) and Alysa Walker (10) also reached double-digit kill totals. Bible also accounted for half of the Falcons' four service aces and notched her fourth double-double of the year with a 10-dig performance. The senior was one of four Falcons to account for at least 10 digs in the match, as senior Jordan Suan tallied 18, freshman Sophie Bridges posted a career-high 12 and sophomore Mia Loyd added 11. Loyd, who added 43 assists for the 13th double-double of her career, also led the team in blocks, with seven (one solo, six assisted).
The Rams struck first, but kills from Bible, Fiaseu and sophomore Bella Christensen quickly tied the set at three, while a second score from Fiaseu gave Air Force the lead at the 4-3 mark – an advantage the Falcons would not relinquish in the set. With Bridges at the serving line and Fiaseu adding her third strike of the match, the Falcons quickly doubled up Colorado State (6-3). A kill and ace from Bible helped Air Force extend its lead to seven (11-4). Senior Alex Hatchett registered a kill and block (with Loyd) on back-to-back plays, while an ace from Fiaseu extended the Falcons' lead to nine (15-6). Air Force reached the 20-point mark (20-12) behind kills from Bible, Christensen and Walker, while two scores from Fiaseu (kill, block with Loyd) and a kill from Hatchett secured the easy 25-14 win for the Falcons.
Colorado State jumped out to a fast 6-1 run in the second, before Air Force raced back to tie the set at nine. Another strike from Fiaseu pushed the lead to three (17-14), but Colorado State used a four-point swing to take an 18-17 lead. Bible tied the set on the next point, while a kill from Walker and another Fiaseu/Loyd block gave Air Force a 21-18 lead. The Falcons held the advantage behind a solo block (22-20) and kill (23-22) from Walked, but the Rams retook the lead at 24-23. Loyd put down the first point from the break and teamed up with Fiaseu for a stop that tied the set at 15-all. The teams traded the next several points, with Air Force tying the set at 16, 17 and 18. Another CSU run held Air Force scoreless and saw the visitors reach set point at the 24-18 mark. A kill from Walker, as well as back-to-back strikes from Bible, cut into the lead, but the Rams tallied the final point for the 25-21 win.
The fourth set opened with four combined errors and a 2-2 tie, but Air Force regrouped first, as Fiaseu and Bible both posted a pair of kills – and Walker notched her second solo block of the night – to take a 9-6 lead. Walker found the floor for a 10-7 advantage, but the Rams responded to tie the set at 10 and take the lead on the next point. Hatchett and Bible added scores, but the Rams began to pull away, taking a four-point lead by the 16-12 mark.
