
Air Force Ahead of Grand Canyon, Lucas Gerten Breaks Academy 1-Meter Record

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo., - Men's swimming and diving pulls far ahead on the first day of action against Grand Canyon, 133-53, on Friday at Cadet Natatorium. Lucas Gerten highlighted the evening, as he broke the Academy's 1-meter springboard record. The swimmers recorded five individual first-place finishes.
Freshman Gerten logged a score of 360.30 to break Air Force's previous record of 358.64 to claim first place on the 1-meter. Brady Nichol scored 330.45 for third place, while Vann Hotchkiss earned a score of 287.95 to place fourth.

"Lucas came into his first season on a mission and has been relentless in pursuit of his goals," said head diving coach Kyle Van Valkenburg regarding Gerten's performance. "I am so pleased but not surprised he was able to take down the record so quickly. I think we will see him break all our diving records in the future and feel lucky to be along for the ride."
On the 3-meter, Gerten took silver with a score of 366.95 and saw Nichol (328.85) and Hotchkiss (305.25) place third and fourth, respectively.
"It was a terrific night for the Falcons, highlighted by Lucas' school record," expressed head swimming coach Rob Clayton. "We were fabulous in the pool with lots of best swims."
Air Force's 200 medley relay team comprised of Dylan Ferguson, Bridon Rosales, Tanner Wilson, and Jordan Falls finished first with a combined time of 1:28.44.
Falls, Joe Christ, Keoni Li, and James Winterfield teamed up for a first place finish in the 400 free relay at 2:59.17.
Freshman Matthew Doty earned gold in the 400 IM after clocking a time of 3:56.99. He was followed by teammates Camden Swigart (3:57.06) and Brandon Cho (4:04.94) in second and third.
Louie Body touched the wall at 1:47.88 for a first-place finish in the 200 back. In second and third place were Winterfield (1:50.02) and Garrett Kennedy (1:50.28).
To take the top spot in the 200 breast, Tanner Wilson clocked a time of 1:58.55, while Cho (1:58.86) and Rosales (2:02.90) rounded out the top three.
Senior Winterfield secured a time of 48.86 in the 100 fly for first place, with Danny Detjen following in third at 49.30.
Tyler Surratt scored nine points for Air Force as the top finisher in the 500 free with a time of 4:35.82. Evan Witte (4:45.44) and Body (4:47.82) came behind in third and fourth, respectively.
In the 100 free, Christ placed highest for the Falcons with a time of 44.78 for second. Falls (44.91) and Li (45.90) managed third and fourth place finishes, as well.
Clayton commented, "We are very happy with our progress so far this fall and are looking forward to a great day tomorrow."
