
Falcons Conclude Rocky Mountain Open with Two Champs

GOLDEN – Air Force's Owen Heiser and Soren Herzog claimed individual titles at the 2025 Rocky Mountain Open hosted by Colorado Mines, February 16. Five additional Falcons placed in the top five of their respective divisions.
Sophomore 197-pounder Heiser was a wrecking ball to the title, posting three technical falls en route to the championship bout. Heiser outscored his first three opponents 52-3. In the finals, Heiser bested USAFA Prep's Karson Tompkins, 17-14. Heiser impressed with 69 total points scored in four bouts.
Sophomore heavyweight Herzog went 3-0 en route to the title, winning his first match against Adams State's Benjamin Tonnessen, 8-3. Herzog finished his run to the title with a pair of pins, sticking Deandre Rucker (Mines) in 5:14, and finishing Tyson Irby-Brown (Western Colorado) in just 35 seconds for the title. Junior teammate Peyton Hahn finished fourth in the same division, picking up a fall (1:15) and a 2-1 decision to finish 2-2 on the day.
Freshman 174-pounder Mike Avelar had a solid day in Golden, finishing second with a 3-1 record. Avelar started hot with a pin (1:12) against Dillon Griffin (Western Colorado) and a tech fall against Noah O'Dougherty (19-3). In the semifinals he posted a 15-9 decision against Erik Anderson (Western Colorado). Wyoming's Weston Hoffschneider was able to get a first period fall (2:45) to win the title over Avelar.
Freshman 141-pounder Lincoln Gregersen finished third with a major decision and decision en route to the semifinals where he fell to Landon Thomas (Vailant Prep), 8-7. Gregersen responded with fire in the third-place bout, blanking Kaiden Huffman (Fort Hays State), 17-0.
Sophomores Trason Oehme (149) and Josh Cordio (184) both finished fifth in their respective divisions. Cordio brought the thunder to Golden, posting two technical falls (15-0, 15-0), and two pins (0:59, 0:47) to finish 4-1 on the tournament. Oehme picked up two decision wins, a medical forfeit and two no-contests to claim the spot.
Next up, Air Force closes the regular season out in dual action against Big 12 rival Northern Colorado on Sunday, February 23. Action in Bank of Colorado Arena is slated for 2 pm MT.
