USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – The 2025 edition of Wing Open Champions were crowned this evening (Feb. 28), as the Air Force boxing team wrapped up its 68th-annual tournament with 10 hard-hitting fights in front of a capacity-crowd at Clune Arena. The blue corner dominated the night, as all but one champion came from that side of Clune Arena – during an event where nine fights went to the final bell and six first-time champions were crowned.
The senior duo of Luke Kohout and Peyton Glenn captured the Outstanding Boxer awards for their respective teams, with Glenn becoming just the third Falcons to capture the honor in back-to-back years after also winning the honor in 2024. Kohout, who missed last year's championship with injury, regained the 147-pound championship that he first claimed in 2023 after earning a unanimous decision over freshman Jaydan Douglas, while Glenn successfully defended her 139-pound title after unanimously earning the judges' votes in her fight with Katie Beavis.
Senior Cass Rosa joined classmates Kohout and Glenn as multi-time Wing Open champions over their four-year career, as she earned a split-decision victory over sophomore Samantha Villa in the 119-pound final to complement the 125-pound title she claimed as a freshman. Sophomore Julianna Morris picked up her second-straight Wing Open trophy in the 125-pound weight division, as she earned a unanimous decision in her final with junior Elise Bell.
The remaining Wing Open champions were all first-time winners. Freshman Sela Panuve rounded out the women's card by earning a split-decision win over senior – and former 139-pound champion – Billie Botes in the 156-pound final, while classmate Juneau Kim opened the men's night with a 125-pound win by unanimous decision over junior Duong Tran. Sophomores Sebastyan Correa Rios and Ellison Taylor both secured their first Wing Open championships after moving down a weight class. Correa Rios, a 139-pound finalist as a freshman, won the 139-pound title after claiming a split-decision victory over junior Dominic Feliz, while Taylor, a finalist at 175 pounds last year, earned the unanimous decision over freshman Djibril Curley in this year's 165-pound final. Junior newcomer Thomas Kensinger captured the heavyweight title after forcing the referee to stop his bout with sophomore Connor Herford, and freshman Russell Klug, the lone victor to come out of the red corner on Friday, claimed a unanimous decision over sophomore Kenichiro Leong in the 139-pound final to wrap up the list of Wing Open champions.
The Wing Open winners remain at the Academy next week, as the Falcons will host the National Collegiate Boxing Association's Western Regionals at the Academy on March 6-8. Tickets are $10 each day and can be purchased at AFTickets.com.
