BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Air Force won six of the 10 bouts to claim a 28-12 victory against Cal State Bakersfield in non-conference dual action, Sunday afternoon, in the Icardo Center. The Falcons improve to 5-0 in the non-conference schedule and 5-6 overall this season.
Four Falcons claimed bonus points wins highlighted by falls from Gavin Caprella and Brian Burburija. For the second straight dual, the USAFA C4Cs led the charge with all three freshmen picking up wins, two of which with bonus points. AF freshmen picked up seven wins over the weekend.
The Roadrunners were first to strike as Richard Castro-Sandoval mustered a late burst to outscore Nicco Tocci, 6-3, at 125.
Air Force sophomore 133-pounder Gavin Caprella ignited the Falcon bench with an early takedown to cradle and finished Santino Sanchez by fall in the first period (2:05). The fall marked Caprella's third of the season and 16th win overall.
Freshman standout Carter Nogle carried the momentum in the 141 class after battling from behind to outscore Hayden Zincin, 7-6. Nogle leads AF with 22 wins on the season, five straight in dual action. Senior teammate Alec Viduya followed suit at 149, battling back from an early deficit to outscore Brock Rogers, 10-6, in a gritty battle. Viduya, back in the win column, has nine wins this season.
At 157, C4C EJ Beloncik continued the Falcons' roll by putting on a clinic and winning by technical fall over Jose Farias, 18-1. Beloncik, determined to get the extra team point, battled hard to secure the tech with just 14 seconds remaining in regulation. Beloncik improved to 10 wins on the season, four in dual action.
CSU Bakersfield got some traction at 165 as Guillermo Escobedo held off freshman Logan Fowler with a 4-2 decision to put the team score at 17-6.
Senior Jack Ganos got to work early against Coen Quintana in the 174 class, scoring a takedown within the first minute and tacking on four nearfall points shortly after. The clinic ensued as Ganos scored takedowns at will to push to a 15-0 technical fall, secured by over two minutes of riding time. Ganos is 5-5 in dual action and has 13 wins.
At 184, senior team captain and No.31-ranked Gage Musser took on three-time NCAA qualifier Gerrit Nijenhuis. Musser was the first to score a takedown while adding an escape point in the third period. With the lead at 4-2 in the waning seconds of the third period, Nijenhuis was awarded a stall point and battled to a late takedown to put Musser away. It was Musser's first dual loss in four duals.
Quick to quell the uprising, freshman 197-pounder Brian Burburija went full-send on Chris Neal, scoring a takedown in the first and second period before pinning Neal's mat to the back at the 4:03 mark. Burbuija improved to 20 wins and five pins on the season and is now 8-3 in dual action. Burburija's effort secured the dual meet.
In the final bout, Antonio Ramos took No. 18 Jake Andrews to overtime but gave up a hard-fought takedown to finalize the dual at 28-12.
