
Women’s Tennis Goes Down to Fresno State

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Air Force Women's Tennis got off to a convincing start on Sunday morning hosting Fresno State but stalled in the early stages of singles competition, resulting in a 4-2 loss to the Bulldogs in Cadet East Gym.
The Falcons opened the day with a dominant doubles performance, earning a pair of 6-1 wins on lines one (Nadia Kojonroj/Arianna Van Houweling vs. Matilde Magrini/Paulina Montiel) and three (Alexis Odom/Giovanna Sanchirico vs. Charlotte Gisclon/Gianna Mastro). Kojonroj/Van Houweling were the first to secure their set, building out a 5-0 lead before giving up a game. Odom/Sanchirico were tied at 1-all with Gisclon/Mastro before taking five-straight games on the way to a doubles clinch. On court two, freshman duo Shivaani Selvan/Sofia Mavor played to 2-all against Andjela Lopicic/Sofia Pizzoni then claimed three-straight games to threaten a 6-2 win before the clinch ended their match.
Air Force opened singles falling on lines two (Kojonroj vs. Pizzoni, 6-1, 6-1) and four (Mavor vs. Lopicic, 6-3, 6-1), as Fresno State leapt past the Falcons to take a 2-1 lead.
On court three, Van Houweling claimed a 6-2, 6-0 straight set win over Gisclon, improving to 9-4 on the season while lifting Air Force back to a tie. The junior went down 2-0 in her opening set with Gisclon then powered through 12-straight games on the way to scoring her third-consecutive dual singles win.
Odom, facing Magrini on the top flight, narrowly bowed out of her match in two sets (7-5, 6-4) to put Fresno State within reach of a clinch. On court five, Selvan dropped her opening set against Montiel then took an early lead in the second before Montiel took three-straight games to tie at 3-all and force match point at 5-3. Down 30-love, Selvan saved match point, looking to tie the set at 5-all, but fell 6-4 to end the match.
On line six, Sanchirico won her opening set 6-4 over sophomore Eliza Dunbar and was a game shy of tying the second after falling behind 3-0 when the Bulldogs clinched and her match was called off.
