Air Force Opens Action at NCBA Championships

LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. -- The Air Force boxing team captured five victories on Thursday (April 10) night, as the squad opened competition at the National Collegiate Boxing Association Championships in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Overall, the Falcons went 5-3 during quarterfinal action.
Junior Duong Tran put Air Force on the board in their first bout of the night, as he earned a unanimous decision over UConn's Griffin Stacy in his 125-pound quarterfinal. Senior Luke Kohout and sophomore Ellison Taylor also advanced out of the opening round, as Kohout decisioned Lock Haven's Rocco Stark at 147 pounds and Taylor defeated Ohio State's Aidan Poling in a 165-pound contest. On the women's side, two first-year Falcons nabbed victories in their national debut, as Maya Lee earned a 147-pound victory over Karalynn Aguilar of UMass and Sela Panuve defeated Lock Haven's Kayla Simmons at 156 pounds.
Three more Falcons also competed on Thursday but dropped hard-fought quarterfinal decisions in their respective contests. Freshman Russell Klug suffered a tough 139-pound loss to Norwich's Nicholas Smollett, while sophomore Justin Bonilla fell in his 185-pound bout with Navy's James Garcia-Gallegos and junior Neo Takazawa dropped a 175-pound decision to Daniel Grano of UConn.
Air Force returns to the Lawrenceburg Events Center tomorrow (April 11) night, with 12 boxers 0 including the entire women's squad – heading into the semifinals. Action is slated to begin at 6:00 p.m. (ET) and the competition will be streamed live on the NCBA's YouTube page.
