
Women’s Tennis Continues Successful Showing at Jon Messick Invitational

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Sweeping successes in both stages of competition headlined Air Force women's tennis' day two at the Jon Messick Invitational, as Falcons new and old picked up victories on Saturday afternoon in Fort Collins.
Following the same format as day one, the Falcons opened with a pair of doubles matches. Three Air Force duos went 2-0 on the day, with the trio of pairings sporting a freshman on each court. Senior Arianna Van Houweling, pairing up with newcomer Alba Martinez in the A draw, earned a pair of wins, downing Colorado State's Sorcha Caves/Annika Plainsek, 6-3, then defeated Wyoming's Violetta Borodina/Dilnaz Mashabayeva, 6-4. With the wins, Van Houweling improves to 4-0 in fall doubles play, while Martinez ends day two at 3-1.
In the D draw, sophomore Sofia Mavor and freshman Yule Kang scored a pair of wins over UChicago's Sarena Bria/Clara Zou (7-6(4)) and Montana State's Hill/Song (6-3), improving both to 3-1 and 4-0, respectively.
Sophomore Shivaani Selvan, teaming with Kelsey Ko in the F draw, downed UChicago's Isabelle Chong/Riya Singh, 6-4, then earned a 6-3 win over Colorado State's Hannah Haber/Anni Amalnathan. Selvan ends day two with a 3-1 start in doubles while Ko scores her first two collegiate victories.
In singles, five Falcons advanced into a Sunday championship in their respective brackets:
In the F-flight singles, Martinez earned a 6-2, 6-0 win over Wyoming's Serina Abriola, improving to 2-0 in her debut weekend and advancing to the F title match on Sunday. Abriola will next face off against Air Force freshman Ko in the third-place final on Sunday after Ko fell in her singles bout against CSU's Stella Morgan.
Van Houweling improved to 2-0 on the weekend in singles, defeating Utah State's Emma Valletta, 7-5, 6-0. With the win, the Falcon captain advances into the A draw finals to face Wyoming's Anastasiia Kochelaevskaia.
Kang improved to 2-0 in singles action to open her collegiate career after earning a 6-2, 6-0 win over NMSU's Whitney Moon. The freshman will face off with Utah State's Terezia Mlkva in the C draw final on Sunday morning.
Selvan won a three-set battle in the D draw, including an 8-6 tiebreak in the first set to defeat CSU's Diana Lizarazo; she will face NMSU's Montana Parkinson-Lubold in her title match on Sunday.
Freshman Jariahlyn Rhoades, after a day one win to advance, earned a title bid in the G draw with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Wyoming's Silver Bijlsma.
Mavor and fellow sophomore Maya Michalski, after a singles loss on day one, picked up competition in their respective consolation brackets. In the B draw, Mavor scored a 7-5, 6-4win over MSU's Terezie Stverakova to earn her first singles win of the season; Michalski, facing UChicago's Oliwia Mikos, fell 7-6(6) in her first set and is set to resume play tomorrow following an early evening rain delay.
