LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- After leading Air Force Volleyball to a thrilling 3-2 conference win over Grand Canyon last week, senior Alysa Walker and freshman Jenness Orcutt were named the Old Trapper Mountain West Athletes of the Week this morning (Oct. 19). Walker captured MW Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Orcutt was selected as the league's Freshman of the Week.
It is the first conference award for both Falcons.
Walker had a stellar week in Cadet East Gym, averaging 4.56 kills, 4.44 digs, and a .322 hitting percentage during the Falcons' 1-1 series with the Lopes. Backed by a season-high 23 kills on .370 hitting (23-6-46) in the Oct. 16 win, the junior tallied 41 kills over nine total sets. In addition to her offensive firepower, Walker also had a record-setting defensive series, tallying a career-best 20 digs on back-to-back nights – totals that helped her collect the 20th and 21st double-double outings of her career.
Orcutt was instrumental in the Falcons' 3-2 victory over Grand Canyon on Oct. 16, as she accounted for four of the Falcons' final seven points in the fifth set – leading the way as Air Force turned an eight-all tie into a 15-8 victory. Hitting .394 for the match, she amassed a career-high 16 kills in the win – a tally that nearly doubled her previous high of nine from the night before (Oct. 15). Orcutt, who also assisted on six blocks (three, each night), finished the week with .357 hitting (25-5-56) and 2.78 kills per set.
With today's announcement, Air Force has had four Falcons combine for five weekly awards from the Mountain West – improving the previous program highs from 2017 (three athletes, four awards) – as Walker and Orcutt joined Grace Fiaseu (MW Offensive Player of the Week, Sept 28) and Ella Vogel (MW Defensive Player of the Week, Sept 14; MW Freshman of the Week, Sept 14).
The Falcons head out on the road this week, when they travel to El Paso, Texas, to face UTEP for the first time as Mountain West opponents. The teams will meet at Memorial Gym on Thursday, Oct. 22, and Saturday, Oct. 24.
