
Falcons Suffer Narrow Setback at Wyoming

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- Air Force junior Alysa Walker registered her first 20-kill match of the conference season this evening (Oct. 8), as the volleyball team suffered a narrow four-set setback to Wyoming in the first of a home-and-home weekend between the two squads. The Cowgirls edged the Falcons 21-25, 25-22, 23-25, 23-25 to put the Mountain West records for both teams at 2-3.
Walker finished the night with a match-high 21 kills, while senior Annamaria Ramos tallied 10 and junior Bella Christensen added eight on .438 hitting (8-1-16). Junior Mia Loyd and sophomore Sam Pope, who tallied assist totals of 22 and 21, respectively, accounted for all four of the Falcons' service aces – with Pope putting down three. Ramos and freshman Aylani Correa tied for the team lead with 10 digs apiece and junior Grace Fiaseu rounded out the Falcons' stat leaders with seven blocks (two solo, five assisted)
A kill from Walker and five early errors by the Cowgirls helped the Falcons to a 5-4 lead in the opening minutes of the match. Walker added another kill, while Ramos put down a kill and teamed up with Fiaseu for a block at the 9-11 mark. The senior added another kill to spark a 3-0 run that included a solo block from Fiaseu and a kill from freshman Jenness Orcutt, as the Falcons went into the media timeout down three (12-15). Walker accounted for the Falcons' next three points (15-18) and the Falcons earned a pair of kills from Fiaseu and Christensen, but the Cowgirls reached set point at 24-18. Air Force held Wyoming scoreless during a run that featured a block from Walker and Fiaseu, but the Cowgirls earned the final point for the 25-21 win.
Walker (kill) and Pope (ace) gave the Falcons an 3-2 lead to start the second set, while a 5-0 scoring run that included back-to-back solo blocks from Fiaseu and Christensen broke a four-all tie and gave Air Force at 9-4 advantage. Christensen's second kill of the set put the Falcons in double digits (10-6), while strikes from Walker and Ramos, as well as a solo stop from sophomore Sonia Donkeng Okpara sent Air Force into the media timeout with a 15-11 lead. The Falcons maintained a four-point lead (17-13) off kills from Christensen and Donkeng Okpara, while the sophomore added another strike to halt a run by the Cowgirls that pulled them within one (17-16). Ramos and Walker tallied kills for a 20-17 advatange and, although the Cowgirls pulled within one again (22-21), another strike from Walker stopped their run and Orcutt put down the deciding strike to secure the Falcons' 25-22 victory.

Loyd served up an ace during that run, while Fiaseu and Orcutt teamed up for a block. The teams traded the next six points, with Fiaseu/Ramos (block at 10-9), Walker (kill at 11-10) and Donkeng Okpara (kill at 12-11) producing tie-breaking scores. Back-to-back strikes from Walker pushed the Falcons' lead to 14-11, but Wyoming responded with seven of the next eight points to take an 18-15 advantage. The Cowgirls pushed their lead to 22-18, before Fiaseu, Ramos and Walker put down kills to bring the Falcons within one at the 22-23 mark. Walker added one more score, but the Cowgirls put down the final two scores for the 25-23 win.

Wyoming broke the back-and-forth play with consecutive points, but Air Force answered with four of the next five points (Ramos kill, Christensen kill, Walker/Okpara block) to take the lead at 9-8. Air Force pushed its lead to two (11-9) behind an Orcutt kill and a Pope ace, but Wyoming answered with six of the next eight points to take a 15-13 advantage into the media timeout. Kills from Christensen and Ramos, as well as another Fiaseu/Orcutt block, pulled the Falcons within two (16-18), but Wyoming pushed its lead to four at the 20-16 mark. Christensen added one more kill, but the Cowgirls claimed the 25-23 win.
The Falcons and Cowgirls will meet up again on Saturday (Oct. 10) afternoon, when the two squads travel to the Academy for a 2:00 p.m. (MT) rematch at Cadet East Gym – live on the MW+.
