MESA, Ariz., – No. 3 seed Air Force fell to No. 2 seed Washington State, 5-1, in game four of the Mountain West Championships on Friday evening at Sloan Park. The Falcons totaled seven hits while the pitching staff combined for 10 strikeouts.

Luke Elmore led the Falcons with a pair of hits, while T.J. Oster, Ben Niednagel, Wyatt Hanoian, Christian Taylor, and Garrett Hutchins each added one.

C4C Jordan Watkins (1-3) made his ninth start of the season, tossing two innings with three strikeouts. In relief, Bowen Brantingham delivered 3.2 scoreless innings while tying his career high with five strikeouts. Marcus Downing made a brief appearance before senior Joey Collier added one strikeout in relief. Gunner Gilmore recorded one out, while Tyler Russ closed the game with one strikeout over the final inning.

Washington State jumped ahead early with three runs in the first inning and added two more in the second for a 5-0 advantage.

In the top of the second, Air Force threatened after Hanoian drew a walk and advanced on a bunt single from Taylor, but a double play ended the opportunity.

The Falcons broke through in their final at-bat to avoid the shutout, 5-1. Hanoian opened the inning with a single up the middle before Tripp Garrish reached on a fielder's choice. Hutchins followed with a single to place two runners aboard, and Elmore's bunt forced an error by the Cougar third baseman, allowing Garrish to score the Falcons' lone run.

No. 3 Air Force will face No. 5 New Mexico in an early elimination matchup at 9 a.m. PT / 10 a.m. MT on Saturday May 23 at Sloan Park.
