Falcons Take Down Tennessee Tech, 3-1

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -- Backed by a season-high 15 kills from senior Annamaria Ramos, the Air Force volleyball team picked up a 3-1 victory over Tennessee Tech on Friday (Sept. 11) night to remain undefeated at the Amy Svoboda Memorial Classic. The Falcons easily took the first two sets (25-13, 25-18), before holding on for the 23-25, 25-22 win that moved their season-opening record to 4-3.
Ramos, who matched her season high of 15 kills, was one of three Falcons to register double-digit kills, as junior Grace Fiaseu tallied 11 on .375 hitting (11-2-24) and freshman Kennedy Simon added a career-high 10 in her first collegiate start. The freshman also accounted for her first double-double at Air Force, as she chipped in 13 digs to tie for second on the team with Ramos and sophomore Sam Pope. Pope led the Falcons in assists (15) and aces (two), while freshman Ella Vogel posted a team-leading 18 digs.
Defensively, the Falcons shined on the block, tallying three solo and 18 assisted stops to out-block the Golden Eagles by a 12-4 margin. Junior Lainie Stapleton led the way with eight blocks (all assisted), while Fiaseu added six (one solo, five assisted) and sophomore Zoe Kirby also accounted for multiple stops with a career-high five (one solo, four assisted).
The teams traded scores to open the match, with a Fiaseu/Stapleton block tying the set at four. Ramos served up an ace that started a 5-1 run for the Falcons that included two kills from Fiaseu and a strike from freshman Jenness Orcutt. The first-year Falcon added another strike at the 11-7 mark, while a Kirby/Stapleton block sparked a 9-0 run that saw Air Force cruise to a 20-8 advantage. Stapleton teamed up with Fiaseu for another stop and added a kill at the 23-10 mark, while a strike from Orcutt and an ace from Ramos gave the Falcons an easy 25-13 match-opening win.
A pair of kills from Ramos propelled Air Force to a 6-1 start in the second set, while Stapleton (kill), Fiaseu (kill), and Pope (ace) also assisting on the run. Five of the Falcons' next seven points were tallied by freshmen, as Orcutt (one) and Simon (four) put down kills – with Simon's fourth strike helping Air Force double up the Golden Eagles at 14-7. A pair of Stapleton blocks (one with Kirby, one with Fiaseu) bookended the media timeout, while Fiaseu added a solo stop at the 18-9 mark. Simon put down another kill at 22-15, while a kill from Kirby and a solo stop by Ramos secured the 25-18 victory for Air Force.

Kirby stopped the run with a kill and teamed up with Stapleton for back-to-back blocks, while a kill from Ramos pulled the Falcons within one at 22-23. Tennessee Tech ultimately scored the final two points to extend the match with a 25-23 win.
