Air Force Sweeps Sunday Games at Navy Open; Go 3-1 On Weekend

Air Force men's water polo (7-3) won both of its games Sunday at the Navy Open at Lejeune Hall on the Annapolis Campus at the Naval Academy. Air Force rallied to defeat Mount St. Mary's 17-13 and George Washington 19-18 in double overtime.
In the opening game against Mount St. Mary's, the Falcons rallied back from a two-goal deficit at the half.
Down 9-7 after getting out-scored 4-2 in the second quarter, the Falcons quickly erased the deficit with four straight goals from the senior duo of Tom Leggett and Jack Richards. The Falcons held a 5-1 scoring advantage in the third quarter to go up 12-10. Air Force went on to out-score MSM 5-3 in the fourth quarter to pull away.
Leggett and Richards led the Falcons with six goals each. Sophomore Max Ellis added two goals.
In the second game of the day, versus GWU, the Falcons again had to rally back from a deficit to pull out the win.
Air Force went up 6-3 after the first quarter. George Washington pulled to within one goal at the half, as the Falcons held a 10-9 lead. The Revolutionarys went on a 4-1 run to start the third quarter, going up two goals at 13-11.
The Falcons responded by scoring the next four goals to take a 15-13 lead in the fourth quarter. George Washington managed to tie the game up with a goal with 24 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime.
Air Force got two straight goals by Ellis in the opening overtime period to go up 19-17. GWU scored a goals in the second overtime, but the Falcons were able to hold on to the win.
Ellis finished with a career-high seven goals in the win. Leggett and Richards followed with four goals each.
The Falcons went 3-1 at the Navy Open and have won three in a row now and 4 of its last 5.
Air Force returns to action next weekend, Fri.-Sat., Sept. 11-12 with four games at the Fullerton Tournament in Fullerton, Calif.
