Nov. 10, Kentucky (A)
Nov. 12, Xavier (A)
Last Week:
Nov. 4, President's Cup at New London, CT
The Competition: The USAFA Rifle Team came in a disappointing third at this year's Presidents' Cup. The Cup is a yearly competition between the four service academies: Air Force, Army, Navy and Coast Guard. The 2000 competition was held at the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT. Air Force finished third behind Navy and Army. Navy won the match with an aggregate score of 6156 out of 6400. Army was second with a score of 6080 out of 6400. Air Force was third with a score of 6051 out of 6400 and Coast Guard was fourth with a score of 5985 out of 6400. The Falcon's team smallbore score was lower than against Wyoming, but that was to be expected as much of the team's emphasis has been placed on their weaker event, air rifle. They were able to bring their air rifle score up 28 points over their Oct 7 match against Wyoming. C1C Rachael Westergren led the team in the .22 rifle event with an 1148 out of 1200. C1C Daimon Geopfert was only 2 points behind with an 1146. C1C Daimon Geopfert led the team in the air rifle event with a 384 out of 400 and team Capt C1C Kevin Mandrik was second with a 381 out of 400.
All said and done, the team is becoming much more balanced than last year when they were strong in the .22 rifle event and very weak in the air rifle event. The team is progressing nicely towards an NCAA Championship qualification to be determined in February.
Upcoming: The team travels to Kentucky and Ohio next week to compete against the University of Kentucky, Nebraska and compete in the mid-season rankings tournament at Xavier University. The team should be up 40 more points in .22 rifle and 10 points in air rifle... scores that are possible NCAA Championship qualifiers.
