"We are getting better every year," said head coach Abdel Salem. "The Nick Toth tournament always provides strong competition. The difference is, this year we performed extremely well. We virtually dominated."
The Falcons did especially well at epee, where the top three finishers were Air Force cadets. Weston Kelsey captured first place among 63 competitors. Luke Chilen and Will Gettys were second and third respectively. Kimberly Sugrue had the highest finish on the women's side, finishing 22nd overall.
The Sabre team also saw positive results, as four of the top five fencers were from Air Force. Newcomer Vernon Thomson grabbed first place honors, while Eric Lathrop and Corey Hunt finished third and fourth. Among the women, Andrea Rix was 18th among 34 overall fencers.
Sean Recame had the highest finish among Air Force foil fencers, grabbing fourth place among 64 competitors, while Chris Jones was sixth. Ashley Roell had the best foil finish on the women's side, finishing 13th overall.
"We fenced very well," Salem said. "I am very proud of our team. It gives us big boost of confidence heading into our upcoming dual meets against some of the top programs in the country."
The Falcons will travel to South Bend, Ind., for the Notre Dame Open on Feb. 3-4. It will be a true test as to how much the Falcons have progressed, as they will face some of the toughest collegiate competition in the country.
