The men's track team made it a clean sweep last Saturday at the University of Missouri quadrangular by beating the host Tigers, Notre Dame and Iowa State while the women placed third ahead of Iowa State.
"This was our best meet of the year, including the Mountain West Conference Indoor Championship," said head coach Ralph Lindeman." Several of our athletes rose to the occasion in this scoring meet and I couldnt be happier."
"We had such a poor performance at the Texas Relays a week earlier, that I challenged the team to step it up in this scoring meet. Thats exactly what they did in almost every event."
The men scored 226 points to outdistance Missouri (204), Notre Dame (169) and Iowa State (15). The women tallied 141 points to finish behind Missouri (234) and Notre Dame (208). Iowa State finished last with 30 points.
Lindeman said the men's triple jump and shot put provided a benchmark on how competitive the Falcons were during the competition. Anthony Parks was in second place and Paul Golando in fourth going into the final jump of the day. Golando moved into third place with a jump of 47'71/4" and Parks won the competition with a jump of 492.1/4." Parks jump was two feet better than his previous season effort in the event. It also equaled the seventh best jump in school history.
In the shot put, Shawn Johnson celebrated his 23rd birthday by posting an NCAA provisional qualifying throw of 59 91/2" to move from third place to second in the final standings. He also finished third in the discus with a throw of 1746".
"Shawn not only had a personal best throw in the shot put by more than an inch, but he also bettered his previous best discus mark. He just had a terrific day," said Lindeman.
Tyler Paige also received praise from Lindeman for his first-place finish in the 400-meters with a time of 48.67 and running legs on the 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay teams. Both teams captured first place.
The men also captured the top three places in both the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles. Luke Marker finished first in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.82. Tom Clark captured first in the 400 hurdles with a time of 52.74.
The lone event winner for the women was Jamie Flood in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:28.34. In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Jean Taylor set a school record with a clocking of 11:16.64. Taylor finished second in the event.
In action this week, a combined squad of 15 to 20 athletes travels to Walnut, Calif., to compete in the Mt. SAC Relays, which begin Friday and conclude on Saturday.
