Duffy Finishes Second In MWC Championship Decathlon

SAN DIEGO, CA--Air Force's three decathlon athletes earned the Falcons 17 team points and the early lead in the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at San Diego State Thursday.
Senior Kurt Duffy finished second in the competition by finishing with 6652 points. Colorado State's Doug Crumb won the decathlon with 6,782. Falcon sophomores Nick Herald and Tom Clark finished fourth (6,184 points) and fifth (6,092). Junior Dan Parkinson from BYU sat in third place with 6,591 points.
"Coming into this competition I thought we would finish third, fourth and fifth," said head coach Ralph Lindeman. "To have Kurt capture second place and help boost our team point total to 17 is a great start heading into Friday's qualifying."
Duffy either matched or bettered his personal bests in three of the final five events Thursday. In the pole vault he equaled his best with a vault of 13' 7 ?". He had a personal best in the javelin with a throw of 131'7" and in the 1,500-meter run, the final event of the competition, he ran 4:35.82.
Colorado State scored 15 points in the decathlon and Brigham Young scored six. In the women's heptathlon, Utah came away with 15 points followed by San Diego State (12), BYU (8), CSU (3) and Air Force (1).
Aja Frary from San Diego State won the event with 5,643 points. Air Force's Brittany Edmonds, a freshman, finished ninth with 4,352 points.
The meet continues Friday with qualifying and five finals on San Diego State's new state-of-the-art track located on top of a campus-parking garage.
