Six Air Force men's tennis players will join nearly 100 other players this week at the 2002 ITA/Omni Hotels Mountain Region Championships to be held for the sixth consecutive year at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the UNLV campus.
Members from 17 western teams will face off as individuals from Wednesday through Sunday on 12 courts each day in both singles and doubles. The tournament is one of nine regionals across the nation being played this week. Both singles finalists and the championship doubles team advance to the 2002 Omni Hotels National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on November 7-10 in Dallas, Texas.
Six of the nation's top-100 players will be in action here: eighth-ranked and top-seeded Oliver Maiberger of San Diego State, No. 70 Guillame Bouvier of Boise State, No. 75 Felix Hardt of SDSU, No. 87 Marcus Berntson of BSU, No. 90 Divan Coetzee of New Mexico and No. 91 Carlos Lozano of BYU. Three of the top 30 doubles teams also will compete: SDSU's third-ranked duo of Maiberger and Ryan Redondo, No. 13 Lozano and Eric Nyman of BYU, No. 28 Valentino Pest and Hardt of SDSU and No. 34 Berntson and Bouvier of BSU. Maiberger is the defending champion in singles and doubles, along with partner Redondo.
Air Force freshman Shannon Buck, who advanced to the semifinals of the UNM Balloon Fiesta Classic two weeks ago, is seeded eighth in the singles bracket.
Wednesday's first round, which gets under way at 8 a.m., will feature 27 singles matches and 12 doubles matches. A second round of singles will follow. There will be a consolation draw in singles to ensure each entrant at least two matches.
The finals are set for Sunday.
