The Air Force volleyball team looked to be on track for a strong conference finish with league victories over BYU on the road and Wyoming at home. But the team is struggling through a slump, losing its fourth consecutive Mountain West match. Air Force fell 3-0 (23-30, 24-30, 27-30) to New Mexico on Friday night. The loss drops the Falcons to 8-15 overall and 2-6 in the conference.
The Falcons got off to a slow start, hitting just .079 in game one of the match. They never recovered the momentum, losing games two and three without ever leading by more than three points. Air Force hit a solid .353 percent in game three, but couldn't put the Lobos away.
Kristin Hamlett led the Falcons with 16 kills on 25 attacks. She had just four errors, hitting a career high .480 percent. Delavane Diaz had 12 kills and 10 digs for the double-double. Tiffany Bishop added 10 kills for the Falcons, while Kristin Huitt had 32 assists. Setter Carly Siefkin had five assists, an ace and a dig in the first action of her career. Air Force finished the match with a .212 hitting percentage (48k-23e-118a). They had just two aces and eight service errors.
The Lobos hit .298 percent (49k-18-e-104a) for the match. Staci Masten led UNM with 12 kills, followed by Vanessa Shields with 11 kills. Shields and libero Blaire Burns each had 10 digs. The Lobos notched 12 team blocks on the night.
The Falcons will regroup and prepare for two league matches next week. They host Utah on Nov. 1st and BYU on Nov. 2nd. The matches will both start at 7 p.m. MST and will be played in the Cadet East Gymnasium.
