Falcons Defeat No. 14 Northern Iowa in Dual Competition

USAF, Colo. - Air Force wrestled to a 17-17 tie against 14th-ranked Northern Iowa, but earned the win by criteria. After tying on several tie-breaking criteria, the Falcons earned the win by virtue of having more near falls than the Panthers. The team's dual record improves to 9-3.
"It was the biggest win for our program in many years," head coach Wayne Baughman said. "Beating a top-20 Division I team is as good as it gets."
No. 12 Scott Frohardt (149) scored the Falcon's first points with an 12-1 major decision over Jon Garvin. Blaine Brown (157) then missed a golden opportunity to score a victory over Drew Kelly when he surrendered a takedown with 30 seconds left in his match, only to lose by two points, 7-5.
Following a loss by Samuel Sherertz (165), Terry Parham (174) picked up four team points with a 10-2 victory over Eric Hauan to make the score 10-8 and pull the Falcons to within two. The Panthers would then win their next two matches to take a 17-8 lead.
The Falcons would need to win their final three matches to have any hopes of winning the dual. Heavyweight Kevin Hoy would win his match, 8-4, followed by Heath McKim (125), who would defeat Tyler Hubbard 3-2 in a close match to pull the Falcons to within three points. In a thrilling finish, Mark Manchio would score a takedown against Andrew Peters in the final seconds of the third period to send the match to overtime. Peters would notch a takedown in overtime to defeat Manchio 7-5 and give the Falcons the victory.
The Falcons next dual meet will be the team's final home meet of the season. Air Force will take on Div. II opponent Western State on Feb. 15, at 7 p.m. They will then have 12 days rest before heading to Wyoming on Feb. 27 for their final dual competition of the season.
