Air Force senior Erik Fisher pitched five scoreless innings in a 20-3 win over Coppin State in a non-conference college baseball game Friday, March 8, at Joe Cannon Stadium in Baltimore, Md.
Fisher, a right-hander from Riverside, Calif., gave up just one hit while collecting eight strikeouts and two walks. He earned his second win of the season as he led the Falcons to a victory in the first game of a four-game road trip.
The game got off to an auspicious start for the Falcons. Leading 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Coppin State put its first two runners on base. A Falcon error on the leadoff hitter and a base hit put runner on first and second with no outs. Fisher retired 15 of the next 17 batters he faced and did not give up another hit until the fifth inning.
Scott Mears and Steve Winters singled in the second and Nick Liegl doubled for a 3-0 Falcon lead. AFA scored six in the fourth and 10 in the fifth for a 20-0 lead. Adam Howes hit a two-run home run in the fourth while Winters drove in two with a triple and Bowie Frost hit a solo homer. The Falcons capitalized on Coppin State mistakes in the fifth with 10 runs on five walks, three errors and five wild pitches. Price Paramore, who played left field and catcher in the game, hit a two-run in double in the inning. Coppin State, 0-8 this season, scored two runs on two doubles in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Air Force had 15 hits in the seven-inning game, while eight Falcons walked and three were hit by pitch. Winters led the Falcons with three hits. He was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI. Paramore was 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Nick Liegl was 2-for-2 with three runs scored. Mears was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI. Air Force stole six bases in the game.
