Air Force won its first Mountain West Conference women's tennis match Saturday by defeating Colorado State, 4-3, in Albuquerque, NM. The Falcons improve to 12-11 overall and 1-5 in MWC matches.
Air Force captured the doubles point by sweeping all three doubles contests. Senior Brooke Parsons and sophomore Laura Nigro combined to win the No. 1 match, 8-3, over CSU's Sonja Hansson and Catherine Sullivan. AFA's Heather Shelby and Gina Black beat Amanda Bartz and Bobbe Vasos, 8-6, at No. 2, while senior Ashley Gee and junior Kelli O'Bryant defeated Alexandra Paganetti and Dasha Zhurin, 8-6, at the No. 3 slot.
Air Force, needing to win just three of the six singles matches, got off to a great start as Parsons won for the fifth time in six MWC No. 1 singles matches, defeating Hansson, 6-3, 7-6. Nigro followed suit, easily beating Bartz, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot. Gee clinched the match for AFA with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Paganetti at No. 6 singles.
The Falcons wrap up their regular season on Sunday, April 14 against Wyoming in Albuquerque. The match is scheduled to start at 9 a.m.
