Air Force scored two second half goals and topped Georgia State, 2-0, in the first game of the Marriott/Georgia State Invitational in Atlanta, Ga.
The Falcons improved to 2-3 overall this season while GSU fall to 1-3-1. The win broke AFA's two-game losing streak.
AFA sophomore midfielder Cookie Day broke the scoreless tie in the 63rd minute when she knocked in a deflection following a Falcons' free kick. The goal was unassisted.
Sophomore forward Jennifer Rowland rounded out the scoring in the 86th minute. Rowland took a pass from Julie Honeycutt and scored from just outside the box with a ball that sneaked under the crossbar.
The Falcons out-shot the Lady Panthers, 17-10, and also had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Both goalkeepers, AFA's J.J. Wolf and GSU's Alexa Pasquarelli, each had seven saves. Wolf earned her first shutout of the season and the Falcons defense held GSU to few scoring chances.
In the tournament's other semifinal game, Tennessee Tech remained unbeaten this season (5-0-1) with a 2-1 overtime win over Charleston Southern.
Air Force and Tennessee Tech play in the championship game, Sunday, Sept. 15, at 11 a.m. EST.
