Navy remained unbeaten tonight by handing the Air Force Academy a 2-1 defeat in the first game of the Toys for Tots Military Academies Women's Soccer Classic at Robert R. Hermann Stadium, Friday, Sept. 6.
Although Navy out-shot Air Force 9-5 in the first half, each had a high quality scoring opportunity. After an Air Force foul that gave Navy a direct kick from the top left corner of the goal box, Navy midfielder Stephanie Park shot wide of the right post in the ninth minute. Falcon midfielder Mary Cholko broke in all alone in the 14th minute, but drilled a shot directly at Mids keeper Kim Bonafede who made the save.
Navy forward Stacy Finley opened the scoring on a penalty kick in the 64th minute, but Air Force wasted no time in responding. The Falcons countered on a corner kick just 65 seconds later. Junior defender Erika Palmer sent home a three-yard header off Cookie Day's serve.
Mid freshman midfielder Lindsay Adlam ended the suspense in the 70th minute with a 40-yard floater from the left flank that just eluded Air Force keeper Jennifer Monson at the right post.
The Mids out-shot the Falcons 18-12 and enjoyed a 9-2 edge on corners. Bonafede made six saves for Navy, while AFA's Monson made eight stops.
On Sunday, Navy (3-0-0) faces Saint Louis at noon and Air Force (1-2-0) meets Army at 10 a.m.
