SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Air Force volleyball team dropped a Mountain West Conference match to Utah in three games on Friday, Oct. 31, in Salt Lake City. The Falcons dropped games of 30-24, 30-17 and 30-13 at the Crimson Court. With the loss, the Falcons move to 13-10 on the season and 3-6 in MWC play.
The Falcons took the first point of the game on a Lamecca Jefferson (Beeville, Texas) kill from Kristin Huitt (Fresno, Calif.) and both teams battled through a close game, trading points through most of the opening plays. Utah took control of the game midway through, but the Falcons continued to rally, holding the Utes within three points of claiming the win for several minutes, while pulling the score to 27-23. Utah held onto the lead and took the 30-24 win.
The Utes scored first in the second game, but the Falcons quickly answered. The two teams traded points, with neither taking more than a one-point lead until the Falcons took a 7-5 lead on two attacking errors by Utah. A kill by Trier Bryant (Denver, Colo.) widened the lead to three, but Utah soon evened it up at eight. The Utes extended the lead, taking the second game 30-17.
Utah opened the scoring in the third game and advanced on a 7-0 run, before Air Force got on the board with a kill from Brittany Oligney (Katy, Texas). It was Oligney's second kill of the season and her first in Mountain West action. The Utes held at least a 10-point lead throughtout much of the final game to take the 30-16 win.
Kristin Hamlett (Escondido, Calif.) led Air Force with seven kills, while Bryant and Molly White (Lafayette, La.) each had five. The Falcons hit .000 or less in two of the three games, while the Utes posted percentages of over .300 in each game. Errors also hurt the Falcons, who had 30 attacking errors in the three-game match.
Up next for the Falcons is a match-up with BYU tomorrow (Nov. 1) in Provo, Utah.
