Falcon Volleyball Drops 3-0 Decision To BYU

PROVO, Utah - The Air Force volleyball team dropped a three-game match to BYU on Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Smith Field House in Provo, Utah. The Falcons fell 30-23, 30-11 and 30-21 to the Cougars in Mountain West Conference play. The Falcons move to 13-11 on the season and 3-7 in MWC action, while BYU improves to 18-6 (8-4 MWC).
BYU earned the first point of the opening game, but Air Force evened it up on the next serve. Kristin Hamlett (Escindido, Calif.) served up an ace on the next play to open a 3-0 Air Force run. The Cougars managed to tie it at four, but a point by Trier Bryant (Denver, Colo.) opened up another 6-0 run for the Falcons. As the two teams traded points, Air Force crawled out to a 16-8 lead. BYU added to their own total, taking a 17-16 lead before Hamlett helped the Falcons earn the tying point. After several closely contested points, the Cougars took a 24-20 lead and went on to take the 30-23 victory.
Both teams consistantly traded points at the start of the second game. Neither side held a lead larger than two points until BYU embarked on a 9-0 run to take a 16-7 lead. The Falcons added a point with strong hitting by Bryant, but the Cougars went on several more runs, hitting .440 and holding the Falcons to just three points en route to the 30-11 game win.
The Cougars opened the scoring in the third game, but Hamlett evened it up on the next serve. Again the two teams traded points, until BYU went on an 8-1 run to widen the score to 15-7. Air Force hung around, pulling it close on several occasions, but BYU took the third and final game, 30-21.
Delavane Diaz (Tampa, Fla.) led the Falcons with 10 kills, while Kristin Huitt (Fresno, Calif.) tallied 27 assists. Rebecca Gallegos (Las Vegas, N.M) hit a perfect 1.000, posting two kills on two attacks. Hamlett posted a team-best three service aces and finished second on the team with seven kills.
The Falcons return to the Academy on Friday, Nov. 7, when they host San Diego State at 7 p.m., in the Cadet East Gym. It is the final home weekend for the Falcons, who will be honoring seniors Delavane Diaz, Brittany Edmonds and Kristin Huitt.
