USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force boxing team took four of ten bouts from Army on Friday, Nov. 7, in front of a capacity-filled crowd at the Cadet Gym's Upper Boxing Room.
Falcons Willie Lloyd, James Gilchrist, James Mitchell and Doug Spear each earned decisions over boxers from Army in the annual match between the two service academies.
Lloyd defeated Army's Mike Benedosso in the 112-pound division, while Gilchrist took the decision from Black Knight David Tyson at 157 pounds. Mitchell took the three-round decision from Ryan Boeka of Army in the 170-pound weight class.
After defeating Army's Stewart McGurk in the 125-pound division, Spear was named Air Force's Boxer of the Week. It is his second honor of the season, as he was also named the Academy's top boxer following a bout with Navy's Josh Veney.
"Spear boxed very well against a taller competitor in McGurk," Air Force head boxing coach Eddie Weichers stated following the match. "He used a nice jab to get inside and landed several telling hooks throughout the match. There were several exciting exchanges, but Spear carried the action to McGurk and kept him from finding a way to get him (Spear) outside."
The Falcons return to action in two weeks, when they host Friday Night Fights on Nov. 21. Action starts at 4:30 p.m., in the Cadet Gym.
