Falcons Notch 80-56 Victory over New Mexico Highlands

The winless streak ended Wednesday night for the Air Force women's basketball team as the Falcons grabbed an exciting 80-56 victory over New Mexico Highlands. Air Force entered the game 0-6 on the season and looking for their first win. Shawna Neff scored 16 points and Letricia Castillo added 15 points, as the Falcons led wire-to-wire en route to a 24-point victory.
Air Force scored the first nine points of the game and never looked back. The team continued to extend its lead and led by 23 points at halftime, 40-17, its largest advantage of the game. Falcon head coach Ardie McInelly cleared her bench in the second half and a scrappy Highlands defense kept the the Falcons from extending its lead further.
Neff had her highest scoring output of the season, notching a team-high 16 points. Castillo, who has scored in double figures in six of the team's seven games, added 15 points to pace the Falcons. Jennifer Roesch was 4-of-4 from the field and had her first double figure scoring output of the season with 11 points. Neff led the team on the boards with nine rebounds, falling one shy of the first double-double of her career. Briana Thomas had eight boards in the game.
The Falcons were 31-of-65 (47.7 percent) from the floor. They notched 10 three-pointers in the game -- a season high. They also had just 20 turnovers and 22 assists, marking the first time this season the team notched more assists than turnovers.
New Mexico Highlands was led by Tara Podpah, who scored 11 points. Paige Leatherman and Kindy Peterson each had 10 points. The Cowgirls committed 21 turnovers and shot just 31.6 percent. They fall to 1-3 overall.
Air Force (1-6) will take a week off for finals and then return to the court on Dec. 18 to take on Northern Colorado. Tip off for the game is 7 p.m. MST.
