USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force boxing team closed out the first half of the season with its last round of Friday Night Fights for 2003 on Friday, Dec. 5, in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym. Amidst the 12 boxers that faced off against one another, junior Mike Sackenheim (CS-23) was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week for his efforts in defeating Ryan Boeka (CS-21) in the 168-pound division.
Sackenheim and Boeka faced off in rematch of an October bout in Detroit. During that match, Sackenheim earned the decision, so Boeka entered Friday's match looking to even the score. Wanting to go 2-0 against Boeka, Sackenheim used a hard right to drop his opponent at the end of the second round. Boeka beat the count, but Sackenheim used another right to drop him in round three to win the decision.
"Mike used good one-two combinations to keep an aggressive Boeka at bay," Air Force head boxing coach Eddie Weichers said. "He used good patience and picked his spot. He's been working on sitting down on his right hand and tonight his determination paid off. He has improved a lot since his last match and now comes forward to hit with authority."
Weichers also had good things to say about Boeka, an Army exchange-cadet, who has been training with the Air Force boxing team this semester.
"Ryan is an exceptional cadet-athlete with a tremendous work ethic," Weichers said. "We've adopted him as one of our own, but there is no doubt will we see Ryan again at the national championships in April."
In other action from Friday night, Doug Spear (117-lbs.), Austin Street (156-lbs.), Geoff Woolf (146-lbs.), Scott Hersh (160-lbs.) and Chris Collins (189-lbs.) also earned victories.
The Falcons are not in competition again until Friday, Jan. 9, when they return to action with Friday Night Fights in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym. The first bout is slated for 4:30 p.m. Also, mark your calendars for the 2004 Cadet Wing Open Championship! The annual event will be held on Sunday, March 7, at Clune Arena in the Cadet Field House.
