Falcons Fall to San Diego State, 73-55

The Air Force women's basketball team suffered a disappointing loss to San Diego State, 73-55. The Falcons were coming off a conference victory over UNLV on Thursday, but they couldn't carry their momentum for a second victory Saturday. They committed a season-high 37 turnovers in the loss. Air Force falls to 7-11 overall and 1-4 in the Mountain West.
The Falcons got off to a quick start, scoring the first 11 points of the game. The defense was solid, holding the Aztecs without a field goal for the first 6:36 of the game. Gwen Grove nailed a three-pointer to give the Falcons a 12-point lead - their largest of the game.
The Aztecs chipped away at the lead, taking advantage of 17 first-half turnovers by the Falcons. SDSU's Veronica Shaw hit a lay up with no time remaining in the half to give the Aztecs their first lead of the game. Despite shooting 45.5 percent, the Falcons trailed 24-26 at the break.
Air Force continued to struggle in the second half with turnovers. Several costly turnovers gave the Aztecs fast break points, allowing San Diego State to pad its lead. They got they first double-digit lead at the 12:57, then pulled ahead by 20 points several minutes later.
The Falcons finished the game shooting 20-of-41 (48.8 percent) from the field. Gwen Grove led the Falcons with 15 points. Emily Gross and Jennifer Roesch each had eight points, while Shawna Neff and Briana Thomas each notched a team-high five rebounds.
Jamey Cox led all scorers with 25 points. Shaw added 12 points, while Ashlee Dunlap notched 11 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double.
The Falcons will be back in action on Thursday, Feb. 6, when they take on Utah in Salt Lake City. They will then head to Provo on Saturday, Feb. 8, for a game against BYU.
