The Air Force rifle team shot with the University of Nebraska in dual meet action Friday in El Paso, Texas. The Cornhuskers defeated the Falcons, 3,843-3,782 on their way into the NCAA Rifle Qualifying meet at UTEP, Saturday.
Air Force finished second behind UTEP at the NCAA Rifle Qualifying meet. The Falcons shot a team score of 6,108 behind UTEP's 6,120. Nebraska fired a 6,089 for third, followed by Wyoming who finished fourth (5,924).
"This was our only chance to qualify for the Championships," said Air Force head coach Capt. Jusitn Broughton.
"We convincingly won the air rifle event with a team season high of 1546 out of 1500," said Broughton.
Senior team captain Nick Breffitt won the match for the Falcons with a 391/400. Sophomore Matt Colvin took third place in the air rifle event with a 389/400.
Breffitt finished second in the smallbore .22 event with an 1155/1200.
"Initial estimates put USAFA in eighth place in the air rifle event. Only the top eight teams in each event advance to the NCAA Championships," said Broughton.
"Our team did very well on the day that it mattered most. I am really proud of how they stepped up their performance and peaked in the air rifle event at the right time," said Broughton.
"Now we must sit back and wait for the rest of the scores to be sent in from across the nation. Not all eight teams will get to go to the championships due to a 48-competitor limit." "Whatever the final tally, the Falcons definitely got the job done this past weekend by shooting the team season high for the qualifier."
Air Force returns to action Feb. 16-17 when it travels to Hawaii to take on Reno, Nebraska and San Francisco.
