Air Force beats Army, Rutgers

The Air Force women's tennis team won a pair of matches in New York Saturday, including its fourth consecutive Gideon Cup by defeating service academy rival Army, 4-3, at Lichtenberg Tennis Center. The Falcons also defeated Rutgers, 6-1.
Air Force gained the doubles point against Army with victories at No. 2 and 3. The Falcons' No. 2 team of Laura Nigro and Gina Black defeated Marissa Limsiaco and Melanie Bundoc, 8-5, while AFA's No. 3 duo of Jen Nigro and Katie Tomkie were victorious, 8-3. Heather Shelby and Katherine Bushey lost the No. 1 match, 8-6, to Annie Collier and Megan Noble.
The two teams split the six singles matches, which started with a thrilling three-setter at the No. 1 position. Limsiaco edged Laura Nigro, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6, winning the third-set tiebreaker 7-5. Shelby pulled out a three-setter at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 5-7, 7-5, over Collier, then Bushey gave Air Force a 3-1 lead with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Noble.
Bundoc posted a win at No. 4 for Army, outlasting Kelli O'Bryant 6-0, 2-1, prior to O'Bryant withdrawing due to injury. Black clinched the team match with a come from behind victory at No. 5 singles over Amanda Paluch, 0-6, 7-6(3), 6-1. Lauren Leftin defeated Jen Nigro, 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 at No. 6.
Nigro and Shelby won three-set matches against Rutgers, while Bushey, Black and Tomkie won in straight sets. The Falcons took the doubles points with wins at No. 1 and 2.
Air Force, now 4-3 this season, plays Columbia on Sunday.
