Wrestling Team Defeats Portland State, 29-13

The Air Force wrestling team remained unbeaten in dual competition, defeating Portland State, 29-13. The Falcons won seven of 10 individual matches to win the dual meet Saturday at the Cadet East Gymnasium. The team improves to 5-0 in dual meets.
"We wrestled better than we've been wrestling," head coach Wayne Baughman said. "We are still a bit hesitant and need to open it up a bit more, but overall everybody up the line did a good job for us."
Heavyweight Kevin Hoy, who is ranked third in the nation, improved to 33-3 overall with a 17-0 technical fall in the second period over Viking Antonio Criado. It was his fourth technical fall this season.
Heath McKim (125 lbs) continued to wrestle well, scoring a major decision. He defeated Zac Enoch to improve to 26-11 on the season.
Josh Peterson (149) notched his fourth technical fall of the season with a 16-1 win over Stuart Eggertson. Peterson, a sophomore, improves to 5-10 overall.
Freshman Justin Gabbard (157) made his varsity debut in thrilling fashion with a 4-2 overtime victory. Gabbard, who has been out the entire season due to injury, notched a takedown over Ryan Thomas in overtime to notch his first-ever win as a Falcon.
Luke Vitolo (133) stepped in at the last minute to replace regular starter Matthew Benza, who is out with an illness. Vitolo notched a 10-4 victory. Chris Bennett (141) also notched a decision to lift the team.
Samuel Sherertz (174) suffered a knee injury in the meet's final match. He will be evaluated next week to determine the extent of the injury.
The Falcons next competition will be a dual meet against Western State College on Feb. 18th at 7 p.m.
