Wing Open Tournament Begins

The Wing Open Tournament is underway.
It began last Thursday with 16 quarterfinal matches. Semifinal bouts are scheduled Wednesday beginning at 4 p.m. in the upper boxing room of the Cadet Gym. The Wing Open Championships will be held in Clune Arena on Sunday, March 9, beginning at 5 p.m.
Nick Haussler was named Boxer of the Week for his 185-pound victory over Sean Mitchell. Haussler, from Cadet Squadron 5, used an excellent jab and good ring movement to earn the decision.
"The first round was close with a slight edge going to Mitchell," said head boxing coach Eddie Weichers, Jr. "However, in the second round, Jake found the range and scored with several combinations to Mitchell's head and body. In the thrid round, Mitchell tired and Hausller boured it on with hooks to the head and body."
Weichers said the 175-pound bout between Augustin Kamdem and Jesus Raimundi was one of the best in the first elimination round. "These boxers were evenly matched and the bout went back and fourth," said Weichers. "The bout went down to the final bell with both boxers standing toe to toe banging away. Kamdem was awarded a split decision to the delight of his many squadron fans in attendance."
Three freshmen won their quarterfinal bouts bringining the total to 10 in Wednesday's semifinals.
