Jim Campbell Wins MWC Pentathlon

Click Here For Complete Pentathlon ResultsAir Force's Jim Campbell and New Mexico's Keren Bentzur were the first event winners at the Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Thursday at the Air Force Academy's Cadet Field House.
Campbell set a new school pentathlon record with 3,861 points. It is also the second best all-time point total in the league. Bentzur's total of 3,845 points ranks fourth on the conference's all-time list.
Campbell was joined by Nick Herald, who finished fifth (3584) and Caleb Pelger, who finished seventh (3440) to give the Falcons a first-day team lead with 16 points. Brigham Young was a close second with 13 followed by New Mexico (6) and Colorado State (4).
San Diego State led the women's division with 13 points thanks to a second place finish by Leslie Miller (3635 points) and a fourth place finish by Shanon Meyer (3546). New Mexico was second with 10 points followed by Utah (6), Colorado State (5) and BYU (5).
"I wanted to win today," said Campbell, a junior from Portage, MI. "My focus today was to just to try and do my best and get the meet off to a good start for my teammates."
Falcon head coach Ralph Lindeman was delighted with the first-day performances of his athletes: "Jim (Campbell) got us off to a tremendous start. I really think his performance and that of Nick and Caleb has set the temp for our team for the rest of this championship event."
The meet continues Friday with finals being contested in 10 events and qualifying in 12 track events for Saturday's finals. The first competition on Friday begins at 1 p.m. (MST).
