Air Force men's team holds second place after the second-day of competition in the Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Cadet Field House.
Defending men's champion Colorado State has 83 points to lead the six-team pack. The Falcons are second second with 51 followed by BYU (45), Wyoming (34), New Mexico (14) and Utah (4).
Getting the Falcons off to a solid start was Thursday's pentathlon performance by Jim Campbell. Campbell set a new school pentathlon record with 3,861 points. It is also the second best all-time point total in the league. Campbell came back Friday with a third place finish in the high jump (6-6 ?).
Campbell was joined by Nick Herald, who finished fifth (3584) and Caleb Pelger, who finished seventh (3440) to give the Falcons a first-day total of 16 points.
"I am very pleased with how both our men's and women's team performed today (Friday)," said head track coach Ralph Lindeman. "But as good as we were, it seemed that Colorado State was just a little bit better. But overall, I think we are in a good position for Saturday's finals."
Lindeman cited the men's long jump as one example of his team's performance. Chris Banks and Anthony Park finished fourth and fifth respectively with lifetime-best performances. Banks jumped 24-feet, 1 1/2-inches and Park, who was a wide receiver on the football team, jumped 24-feet, 1-inch.
The meet continues Saturday with the first field event beginning at 1 p.m. and the first running event scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.
