Play was suspended after 10 cold, drizzly innings at Lobo Field Friday with the University of New Mexico and the Air Force Academy deadlocked in a 7-7 tie.
The Falcons led 6-0 going into the bottom of the eighth inning, when the Lobos erupted for four runs. Sean Murray's RBI single was followed by a two-run double by Cory Lizarraga off of Air Force reliever Scott Mears. Then in the bottom of the ninth inning, with the Falcons up 6-4, Mountain West Conference home run leader Chris Alexander hit a two-run shot to left field that tied the game at six.
In the top of the 10th, Air Force designated hitter Derck Kasel followed suit, blasted a solo home run that gave the Falcons a 7-6 advantage. But the Lobos rallied again.
Lizarraga began the bottom frame with a single off of Air Force reliever Jason Pruitt. Pruit retired the next two batters, when with UNM's Matt Young at the plate, Lizarraga scored on passed ball to force an 11th inning.
With the game eclipsing the three hour mark and dark and even more cold setting in, play was suspended for the night.
The Falcons and Lobos will conclude today's game, Saturday at 12 noon. Following its completion, the teams will play game two of a three-game series.
Note: The box score from this game will be available once the game is officially completed.
