This Weekend: Air Force (8-12 overall, 0-6 MWC) travels to San Diego this weekend for a three-game Mountain West Conference series with the San Diego State Aztecs (9-16, 2-1), March 21-23 at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Game times are 6 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday PST.
Schedule Change: The Air Force-San Diego State series which was originally scheduled for the Academy's Falcon Field, has been moved to southern California due to snow at the Academy. The teams will play Friday-Sunday, March 21-23, at Tony Gwynn Stadium in San Diego. The AF-SDSU series scheduled in San Diego, April 25-27, has been moved to Falcon Field. Game times are 2 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday MT.
Radio/Television: There is no radio or television in the Colorado Springs area. Selected baseball games will be broadcast later in the season, but the schedule has not yet been set. Once the schedule is confirmed, it will be posted on the baseball page of the website on the right side of the screen.
Scouting the Opponent: San Diego State is 9-16 overall this season and 2-1 in the MWC. The Aztecs took two of three from Utah last weekend at home. Prior to the Utah series, SDSU had lost 10 of 12, but the Aztecs have played a top-caliber schedule. SDSU has faced Arizona State, South Alabama, Miami, Oregon State, Washington, Cal State Northridge, UC Irvine and Long Beach State this season. Peter Stonard leads the team with a .330 average and two triples. James Guerrero leads the team with 22 RBI and is tied for the team lead with two home runs. The team is hitting just .261, but the pitching staff has a team ERA of 4.99. Mike Moat is the team's top starter with a 3-1 record and a 3.12 ERA in seven starts.
Series History: Air Force and San Diego State have played 56 times and the Aztecs hold a 42-14 lead in the series that began in 1961. Last season, Air Force won four of the six regular-season games, sweeping the Aztecs at Falcon Field by scores of 8-4, 7-3 and 8-4. In San Diego, the Aztecs took games one and three by scores of 2-1 and 14-5. AFA won the second game, 7-6. San Diego State ended the Falcons' season in the MWC Tournament with a 9-6 win on day two of the tourney in Provo, Utah.
Last Week: UNLV swept a three-game MWC series from Air Force, March 14-16, in Las Vegas.
Series Notes: Senior catcher Dan Petro was the team's top hitter at UNLV, going 6-for-10 with one run scored and one RBI. Junior outfielder Mike Rose hit .429 (6-for-14) with two runs scored and an RBI. Josh Phifer and Tony Shockley each hit .333. Nelson Prouty hit the team's only home run, a solo shot. The Falcons hit .274 as a team with a .934 fielding percentage. AFA's seven errors led to 10 unearned runs. AFA was held to just one stolen base in four attempts.
Streaks: Derck Kasel and Nathan DeRohan each had seven-game hitting streaks snapped in the first game at UNLV. The streaks tie as the longest by a Falcon this season. Tony Shockley had a seven-game streak early in the season.
On Deck: Following the SDSU series, Air Force travels to Honolulu, Hawaii, for five games in five days in the University of Hawaii Rainbow Easter Tournament. The Falcons will play Hawaii, Western Illinois and Lewis and Clark State (Ore.) in the four-team, five-day tournament.
